Use suitable gear you already own first. Borrow or rent unfamiliar, expensive items if you can check fit, condition and availability before the trip. Buy when the item fits your plans and the cost makes sense across the trips you realistically expect.
Start with the items that drive the budget
Make a shortlist of what you do not own: usually some combination of backpack, shelter, sleeping bag and pad. List the specific model or type you need before calling a lender or store. Check return dates, size options, and what the kit actually includes.
Compare options by out-of-pocket cost, time to collect and return, suitability, and how likely you are to use the gear again. A cheap option that does not fit is not a useful saving.
Rental fee and deposit are different
A rental fee is part of the cost. A refundable deposit is money you may need upfront and expect back if the terms are met. Keep the two numbers separate, and verify taxes, late fees, and pickup and return windows with the provider. REI's rental pricing page is one example of a published schedule; products and availability vary by location.
Compare the same trip in two ways
| Example only | Borrow shelter | Rent shelter |
|---|---|---|
| Shelter fee | $0 | $30 |
| Pad you decide to buy | $35 | $35 |
| Refundable deposit | $0 | $60 |
| Net outlay | $35 | $65 |
| Cash needed upfront | $35 | $125 |
These amounts are hypothetical, not quotes. Use the overnight planner to enter your prices and compare a plan with a rental against one using gear you can borrow.
When buying starts to make sense
Divide the purchase price by the all-in per-trip rental cost to get a rough comparison. A $120 purchase compared with a $30 rental equals four rentals before repair, transport or resale. This is a decision aid, not a prediction of how many trips you will take. Check fit and condition for borrowed, rented, or used gear before relying on it.
Common questions
Do refundable deposits count toward the trip budget?
Include them in cash needed upfront, but keep them out of net trip spending unless some or all will not be refunded.
Should I buy everything before a first trip?
No. Start with suitable equipment you already have and compare borrowing and renting for the gaps.
